Aryeh Bakst, 18, of Lakewood, was charged on Wednesday, Mar. 27 with vehicular homicide. Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer announced the charge in a news release on Thursday, Apr. 4.
Lakewood police responded to the crash at the intersection of County Line Road and Laurelwood Avenue at around 9 a.m. on Sunday, Mar. 3. Bakst was driving a 2023 Tesla west on County Line Road when his car hit a 2013 Toyota Corolla driven by 82-year-old Jules Brotsky of Lakewood in the intersection.
Bakst and Brotsky were rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Brotsky was listed in critical condition, while Bakst was treated for his injuries and released.
Investigators said Bakst was driving about 88.6 miles per hour in a 45-mph zone. He was issued summonses for reckless driving, careless driving, and speeding on Thursday, Mar. 7.
Brotsky died from his injuries on Tuesday, Mar. 26. Bakst was charged with vehicular homicide the next day and he surrendered himself to Lakewood police on Wednesday, Apr. 3.
Bakst was processed at the Ocean County Jail and released on bail.
